In the vast and sweeping world of food, it’s fair to say that some food creations have stood the test of time better than others. For example, the sandwich has been universally enjoyed for hundreds of years. On the other hand, the popularity of Sloppy Joes has certainly waned over the years. Since we are all about retro vibes here at The Breakfast Club, we’ll be taking a look at some nostalgic dishes that you may have forgotten about. Learn more by reading below!

The Sloppy Joe

By no means the most visually attractive sandwich out there, the Sloppy Joe enjoyed considerable popularity, particularly in the 80’s thanks to its relative ease of preparation and, subjectively, tastiness. This meaty sandwich features a blend of ground meat, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, onions, and peppers, and was in some cases topped with cheese or other fixings. Though the Sloppy Joe may not be entirely forgotten and is still enjoyed by some, it remains a staple of vintage American cuisine that is worth reminiscing about.

Seven Layer Dip

Tex-Mex cuisine has become an integral part of American cuisine – as the likes of tacos, burritos, and quesadillas are now ubiquitous and widely enjoyed. However, it wasn’t always this way. In the 1980’s, a new challenger of Tex-Mex cuisine had nudged it’s way into American cooking – the famous Seven-Layer Dip. Though it has since undergone many changes and incarnations, original iterations of this dish featured the likes of guacamole, cheese, refried beans, sour cream, and other elements of Mexican-inspired cuisine. While modern favorites such as tacos and burritos have seemingly dominated Mexican-American cuisine, the roots of this particular cuisine shouldn’t be forgotten.

Dirt

No, not literal dirt, but the retro dessert concoction adored by children and adults with a sweet tooth. Also originating in the 1980’s, dirt rose to become popular across America as it was both easy to prepare and enjoy. The essential ingredients of dirt are pudding, crumbled oreos, cool whip, and in many cases, gummy worms (hence the namesake of the dish).
